Child-Marriages in the Muslim World

AOL News reports that for the first time in Saudi Arabia, the government run Human Rights Commission has hired a lawyer to look into the case of a 12 year old girl who was forced to marry her father’s 80 year old cousin. The arranged marriage was opposed by the girl’s mother, who since withdrew her opposition. The father received $23,000 as bride price.

Among the Wahhabi Muslims in Saudi Arabia there is strong support for child marriages and claim that it is supported by the Koran. Mohammed himself married his third wife, Aisha, when she was 9 years old.

"It is incorrect to say that it's not permitted to marry off girls who are 15 and younger," Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, the kingdom's top cleric, said in January, according to the regional Al-Havat newspaper "A girl aged 10 or 12 can be married. Those who think she's too young are wrong, and they are being unfair to her."

Human rights advocates hope that the highlight on this case will push for the introduction of legislation set the legal age for marriages between 16 and 18.

Have you heard about the Saudis sending war planes to indiscriminately bombcivilians in Yemen because one of their soldiers was killed by a Yemenirebel who happen to be Sunni? It happened on November 5, a few days ago.

According to the article on Yahoo news: "Saudi jets dropped bombs on crowdedareas including a local market in the northern province of Saada," Hawthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam told The Associated Press. "They claim they are targeting al-Hawthis, but regrettably they are killing civilians like the government does." He said the attacks were followed by hundreds of artillery shells from the border. "So far, three killed have been pulled out of the rubble, including a woman and a child who perished when their houses were bombed and burned down," said Abdel-Salam.

What? You mean there hasn't been a U.N. outcry? No commission has been appointed? It's not headlines in the New York Times, or the LA Times,or CNN? What you haven't heard about it at all? What if it was Israeli planes dropping bombs on terrorists in Lebanon? Here, the Saudis claim the al-Hawthis rebels killed ONE Saudi soldier.

Kowtowing to Petrodollars

I just found out about another two incidents that are showing how Europe is progressing in its metamorphosing into Eurabia. The examples are from England courtesy of British Midland Airways Limited (BMI).

In the first case BMI fired Lisa Ashton, a 37 years old stewardess who was ordered to wear an abaya, the black dress that covers every part of the body except hands and face, and walk behind her male colleagues while on stopovers in Saudi Arabia. The dismissal came when Ms Ashton asked to be sent on flights to Saudi Arabia claiming discrimination. Ms Ashton has sued, but the early court decisions have sided with the airline claiming that they had the right to impose rules that take into consideration other cultures.

The same airline is using a map that shows the progress of the flight. The maps are programmed not to include Israel, and instead have placed a dot with the city of Haifa, only that they spelled it Khefa, old Arab name by which it was known. The airline promised to correct this “error.”

Like Bob Grant used to say: “It’s sick and getting sicker”.
